Types of Implant
The term “Implant” is a medical name of artificial material inserting for breast augmentation. It can be named simply as Insert. Even if the same kind of implants, they can be classified into the round shape and the anatomic shape, and the round shape is more suitable for Korean women who have narrow chest and shoulder.
The anatomic shape was made adopting the shape of female breast, it can bring natural look after operation, but in some cases, the breast may look longer, and if the implant rotates inside the body, the breast shape changes in large scale which requires reoperation as disadvantage.
Classification by the enclosure
Cohesive Gel Filled Breast Implants
It is the most widely used implant in Korea replacing the saline bag of the past. Even if the bag containing the implant ruptures due to the abrasion after long time lapse post op, the Cohesive Gel does not migrate inside the body because of its excellent cohesiveness but maintain the shape, which is approved by FDA and KFDA for its use
It has good feeling when touching, with far more natural looking shape, thereby, except any special case, nearly the most of breast plastic surgery uses Cohesive Gel
Saline-filled Breast Implants
As the implant model that had been used mostly in the past, it uses 0.9% saline fluid as the enclosure of the implant. It has advantage of adjustability of both breasts sizes after insertion into the breast by injecting saline fluid with different quantities for the right side and for the left side making balance between them. It has disadvantages that the size of bag may be reduced later from little by little spilling of saline fluid, and it is not so soft in comparison to the silicon gel filled implant, thereby, it is not being used much in these days
Classification by the surface conditions
Smooth type
Since the surface is soft and smooth, it is advantageous for positioning it during the surgery, and as it only needs small incision, it can minimize the surgical scar marks. On the other hand, as it was known as the capsule can be formed, leaving the more potentials of Capsular Contracture formation that can make the breasts hardened. Therefore, efforts should be given more to prevent Capsular Contracture after operation
Texture type
The surface is not smooth nor slippery but have webbing with a bit Rough feeling The background of Texture type that it was designed To reduce the chance of Capsular Contracture as the tissue grows into gaps and the force of vector does not form to a certain direction.
However, it is only a hypothesis that the texture type can prevent the Capsular Contracture, which is different from actuality just as if the theory is different from actual. Some clinics provide incorrect information to the patients that when used this type, it is ok to neglect Massaging, therefore it needs caution not to get such wrong information. Some theories say that the touching sensation is better than the smooth type (with presupposition of no Capsular Contracture) while other theories say the type has worse touching Feeling (because the surface is rough). Nonetheless, it is nearly an authentic theory that the difference in touching sensation is not so big in actuality
Classification by the shape
round type
Commonly, the word implant refers to this type, which is an implant in the shape of dome. It is in round shape with symmetry between up and down as well as right and left. The central part is the highest in shape, and it can give the volumetric looks all to the below side of the breast as well as the upper side of the breast. This shape is possible for both of Saline-filled Bag and Silicon Gel-filled Bag. Also it keeps the natural shape even when lying down. When standing up, the implant slightly goes downward naturally due to the weight by gravity, making the profile of breasts even more natural
Anatomic type or Tear drop type
Looking at the breasts from side, this type makes the profile of breast just like a tear drop that the upper side is slightly dented, making slightly convex curving gradually having the nipple as the peak point.
As it is designed in anatomic way according to the ideal shape of breasts. But its biggest disadvantage is that it can feel a bit unnatural in shape when lying and if its position is not precise, its shape can be less beautiful than the round type, thereby, this type implant cannot be said as always good in actual application unlike the theory.
